Best for: New or low-volume businesses
Reading your statement
Most of what you pay is set by the card networks. Only the markup really changes between providers, and that's what we focus on.

No. Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine (and Puerto Rico) don't allow businesses to surcharge credit cards, and other states, such as Colorado and New York, add caps or disclosure rules. California's Honest Pricing Law generally requires mandatory fees to be included in the advertised price. Card brands cap surcharges (Visa at 3% or your cost, whichever is lower), and debit and prepaid cards can't be surcharged at all. A cash discount program is a separate option that can work in these states when it's properly disclosed. Rules change often, so we confirm what applies in your state before setting anything up.
